INTRO:

This was it; the day they've all been waiting for. As a young girl who had just turned 19, I had envisioned my wedding to be on a beach with lots of decoration, twinkled lights and pearls on my wrist. I’d imagined it happening right after sunset where visible light rays could add meaningful glows to an already memorable occasion. Yes! That’s my dream. I don’t need much crowd to achieve this… just family and a few friends would do. But that’s a dream for a 25 year old; I’m just 19 and damn I’m in love this guy called David – the guy I willingly gave my virginity. He is just 21 and we are about to get married. What life would we live?

My father was a deacon, well respected in Church. He took me as his pride; the very apple of his lovely eyes. I didn’t stand a chance of making any mistake.

"You just have to be perfect," he often tells me like I was an angel without blemish.

Dating any guy was out of the picture. I would squat all night long if he dare catch me standing, talk less of even talking to any boy. But it wasn't my fault anyway; there was little I could do to stop them from chasing me. I’m extremely pretty with a sweet-tiny voice that commands a lot of attention. Each time I sang at Church, I would have to ran home as soon as services comes to a close before dad sees any of those guys asking for my number.

How then did David come into the equation? This guy was simply too handsome, with an equally melodious voice that often made me insist that he takes solo in our Choir group. I began to crush on him right from the moment he saved me from falling off stage during Christmas Carroll. He was very gentle; even my dad loved him. So it wasn’t an issue at all when dad noticed we became friends.

His sacrificial nature is second to none. Somehow, he stuck to my side. And when he asked me out, I didn’t hesitate for one second; I agreed immediately. There was nothing to think about! Before long, we began to play the lovers version of hide and seek. We dated secretly for five months. I had my first kiss on my nineteenth birthday and I felt I was ready… ready to give him everything.

I invited him home for the first time when mum and dad had gone for their normal Church meetings. I had no idea he was a virgin too. We embarked on that painful-blissful journey, but to my hard luck, my parents caught us unclad. It was one hell of a moment for me, but I didn't care. It was decided then: dad would not tolerate immortality in his house. We have to get married.

Now I stand, staring at the mirror in my wedding dress. David had pleaded earlier with me to give in, but I know we still have a lot to accomplish in life. So I ran away, leaving him stranded at the altar. I have to rediscover my life again, somewhere far away. My name is Oluwatoke Bisola, and this is my story.

Episode 1

Unlike every story you've read, mine is a bit complicated; it sometimes makes me cry and laugh alike. As I explained earlier, I escaped to Lagos with the little savings I had on me, without directions. Fortunately, I had my phone in my purse so I called up an aunt who resided in Lagos. Aunt Naomi wasn’t in good terms with my mum; I really wish I knew why. But I still went to her place with the little iota of faith left within me.

I arrived at exactly 7 O’clock in the evening. It had rained very heavily that day and I shivered profusely, intensified by the fact that my clothes got wet. I was ushered in by my cousin Bode. He was very tall and huge; a Goliath of a man. I was scared of him to begin with, but calm was restored within me when I remembered my mum’s assurance some fews years back that Bode was kindhearted.

"Bukky… what is this?”
